Frequently Asked Questions

What is KENC Community Radio?
Our music is a mix of Americana, traditional country classics, contemporary traditional country, jazz, blues, folk, bluegrass; both traditional and contemporary, as well as swing and some pop crossover. With over 21,000 songs in our library and we're still adding, the mix is not the same old same old that you hear everywhere else. The music is familiar but with such a wide variety and few commercial interruptions, and the fact that we're always on 24/7, it's no wonder people leave us on all the time.

How many listeners do we have?
Because we're a low power AM station, we do not show up in the "Arbitron" ratings that stations in major markets subscribe to. We have two and soon three transmitters in the Stayton-Sublimity communities plus we're on line. We work hard to market our format both within our respective communities and on line. We get emails from most every state in the United States, plus Canada, Hawaii, Guam, Japan, and many many cities and towns in Oregon and Washington. Because of our programing, we become the "Home Town" audio newspaper that keeps us in touch with each other. I regularly get comments from local listeners about our morning news programs and event announcements. Because we care about our community, we are sent hundreds of event listings because producers of these events know that we will reach an audience that is mature but informed.

What is Low Power AM Radio?
The FCC has a clause in their law that specifically allows for small stations like ours to exist. We are not licensed because we broadcast under one watt; 100 milliwatts to be exact. Each of our transmitters cover about 2 1/2 square miles each transmitter puts out 100 milliwatts. We can have as many transmitters at 100 milliwatts as we can pay for. We are bound by good taste and common sense in what we broadcast but are not licensed per part 15.215 of the FCC law for guidance of low power broadcasting. We are the voice of our community and work very hard to be responsible, accurate, and proactive to give our communities a radio voice. It would be wonderful to have 10 watts or more, but that comes with a big price tag and we simply can't afford that at this time. It is our goal to increase our wattage, but watts equal dollars and frankly what we have is working. That's why we really mean it when we say, "It's not how big your watts are, it's how you use them!" Of the three radio stations that serve this community, we are the only one that does local news and public affairs programming on a daily regular basis.

Is it expensive to advertise on KENC?
Not at all. Our corporate underwriters pay $50 a month for advertising. What that buys is a 30 second spot about your product or service that is heard at least twice during the Monday through Friday morning drive time. Ken Cartwright is live each morning Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM till 9:30 AM. Plus the ad is played at least 10 other times a day within a 24 hour cycle in random order. Very inexpensive.

What kind of news do we provide?
Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 AM we have CNN network news on the hour and AP Radio news on the half hour. Plus at 7, 8 & 9 AM we deliver live local, county and state news. Any time news or weather breaks, we break in and do immediate news updates. Plus, Paul Harvey at 6:35 AM and 8:45 AM.

What else does KENC do?
Speciality programming is what we do. As we grow and add more staff, we will expand our live programming. As it is now, besides Ken Cartwright's morning show "Serendipity Corner", we air Red Steagall's Cowboy Corner on Saturday mornings from 8 to 9 AM. It's then followed by Pricilla Glidewell's Saturday morning show called "Pricilla's Place from 9 to 11 AM. He show is a two hour in depth program about specific artists each week and offers an up-close intimate view of each artists life and times. Wednesday mornings, from 9:15 AM to 9:30 Marlinda Stearns airs her show "Stories from the bookshelf", a program about books from the Stayton Library. Each week she picks a book and reads short chapters from the book of the week to give the listener an audio look at what that book and author have to offer. KENC also imports several syndicated shows like Bluegrass Review from Minnesota that airs Wednesday mornings from 8 to 9 AM. River City Folk a one hour show that airs Monday's from 8 to 9 AM and Into the Blue, a three hour bluegrass show that airs Fridays from 9 to noon. We will be looking to expand live coverage of local sports and specialty events produced in our area, as staff grows.
